Job Description

Position Summary

The Mechanical Equipment Engineer I will be responsible for supporting the design, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems and machinery. This role applies engineering principles to enhance equipment life, reliability, and efficiency while setting standards for new equipment. The ideal candidate will specialize in one engineering area while demonstrating proficiency in an additional focus area.

This position reports to the Manager – Mechanical Equipment Engineering and is based in Paramount, CA , with travel required to other facilities as needed.

Pay: $84k-$98k

Key Responsibilities

Core Mechanical Equipment Engineering Duties:

  • Monitor, evaluate, and improve equipment performance .
  • Develop and present technical reports and recommendations to management.
  • Provide technical expertise to maintenance teams, technicians, and plant engineers.
  • Support design and implementation of new equipment .
  • Analyze root causes of equipment failures and implement cost-effective solutions.
  • Review equipment drawings to optimize efficiency and minimize failures.
  • Generate and maintain schematics, risk assessments, and compliance documentation .
  • Ensure compliance with relevant equipment codes and standards (e.g., NEC, UL, NEMA).
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues .

Specializations

The Mechanical Equipment Engineer I will take a lead role in one specialization and a supporting role in another.

I. Mechanical Hands-On Specialization:

  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical system failures in collaboration with maintenance teams.
  • Hands-on work with machinery and mechanical components as required.
  • Document repairs and maintenance history .
  • Reverse engineer obsolete parts and identify replacement components .
  • Develop spare parts lists and maintenance schedules .
  • Conduct periodic equipment inspections to recommend system upgrades.
  • Maintain blueprint accuracy and part specification databases .

II. Hydraulic Engineering Specialization (Preferred Skills):

  • Read and interpret hydraulic schematics .
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic systems, servo valves, and proportional valve controls .
  • Experience in mechanical and hydraulic system integration is preferred.

III. Furnace Engineering Specialization:

  • Develop combustion standards for direct and indirect flame burners .
  • Optimize gas burner efficiency through data-driven adjustments.
  • Implement NFPA 86 Standards for Ovens and Furnaces .
  • Develop temperature uniformity survey requirements .
  • Improve furnace insulation life expectancy and refractory material selection .
  • Oversee safety compliance for furnace operations .

Preferred Skills for Furnace Engineering Specialization:

  • Combustion system theory & optimization .
  • Gas boiler operations & efficiency .
  • NADCAP knowledge .
  • PLC programming (Siemens & Allen-Bradley) .
  • NFPA 86 compliance experience .

Focus Areas

Candidates should have proficiency in at least one of the following:

1. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Specialization

  • Develop simulation models for stress analysis and failure prediction .
  • Perform linear/non-linear static and dynamic simulations .
  • Review outsourced FEA projects when necessary.
  • Translate real-world failures into FEA models to optimize designs.
  • Troubleshoot convergence and modeling issues .

Preferred Skills for FEA Specialization:

  • Advanced transient, fatigue, and non-linear analysis .
  • Inventor 3D, AutoCAD 2D, Vault, Fusion 360 .
  • Autodesk Nastran In-CAD for advanced simulations.

2. Equipment Risk Assessment Specialization

  • Conduct annual risk assessments to prioritize improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with agency and insurance requirements .
  • Apply root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for equipment reliability planning.
  • Develop and maintain innovative testing protocols (e.g., ultrasonic tie rod inspection, vibration monitoring ).
  • Establish contingency plans for emergency equipment failures.

Preferred Skills for Risk Assessment Specialization:

  • FMEA (Failure Modes & Effects Analysis) .
  • Root Cause Analysis methodologies.
  • Six Sigma principles .
  • Strong understanding of insurance terms for documentation review .

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Must have 2+ years of experience as a Mechanical Equipment Engineer
  • Must meet ITAR and EAR residency requirements (U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents only).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and schematics .
  • Prior experience with industrial equipment maintenance, design, or analysis .
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% to support other facilities.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) .
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical writing skills for documentation and reports.
  • Knowledge of mechanical/electrical schematics and troubleshooting .
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and implement technical data .
