Position Summary:
Portland Parks and Recreation is excited to announce an opportunity for a Recreation Coordinator I to join our Adaptive Recreation team! In this role, you will play a vital part in enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities by planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating a diverse range of recreation programs .

What you'll get to do:
  • Design and implement inclusive recreation programs that accommodate a wide range of abilities, including excursions, arts, health and wellness, music and dance, fitness, and more.
  • Recruit , train, and coach recreation staff and volunteers.
  • Foster relationships with community-based organizations to promote recreation opportunities.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to diverse and multicultural communities through various communication channels (in-person, phone, email).
  • Conduct  thorough research to manage the logistics of organizing activities, ensuring smooth operations and positive experiences for all participants.
  • Assess and evaluate programs regularly to gather feedback and make improvements, ensuring that all offerings meet the needs and interests of people with disabilities.
  • Maintain accurate records and confidentiality regarding participant information and program details.
  • Use problem-solving skills and sound judgment to address challenges and implement de-escalation techniques when necessary.

The following minimum qualifications are required  for this position:
  1. Knowledge of community recreation needs specific to people with disabilities, with the ability to incorporate the diverse needs of older adults from various ethnic backgrounds, ages, physical abilities, and interests into effective program planning.
  2. Experience in planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs relevant to people with disabilities.
  3. Knowledge of effective methods for recruiting, assigning, directing work, motivating, and evaluating the performance of permanent, part-time, and volunteer staff.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including staff, city employees, program participants, and the general public.
Candidates must also possess:
  • A valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check
